First of all, since adrenal fatigue is caused mainly by stress, try to immediately reduce stress in all aspects of your life. Try to determine where the major areas of stress are for you (whether that's poor diet, unhealthy relationships, too little sleep, chronic infection, type A personality characteristics, etc). Address these areas of stress as fast as possible and get them under control. (For examples of stressors, check out our Causes page).
Try to build more fun into your life, whether that means watching your favorite movie or laughing at your favorite TV show.
Realize that this is a healing time for you and you're going to have to make some changes. Accept the fact that you're going to probably be doing less or doing things slower than you have been in the past. Don't beat yourself up over this (that's stressful!). Adjust your expectations, be determined to love yourself and keep a positive attitude.
Make sure you're getting enough sleep (that's when the adrenals rest and rejuvenate). Try to go to bed before 10 p.m. and sleep as long as possible - preferably until 9 a.m. If you're having trouble sleeping, many people find that taking melatonin helps them to get a great night of rest. It's a natural sleep aid and won't stress your liver.
- Make Appropriate Dietary Changes
Cut out all caffeine, sugar, chocolate, white flour, trans fats, hydrogenated oils. Focus on fruits, vegetables (especially leafy greens), high quality protein, nuts and seeds. See Adrenal Fatigue Diet for more details.
- Take Appropriate Supplements
When we are constantly under stress, major vitamins and minerals get used up faster than normal and we can quickly become deficient (which can introduce a whole host of other problems).
Make sure you're taking the appropriate supplements (for example, B-complex vitamins) to build your body back up. For more on this visit our article on the Best Adrenal Supplement.
- Adjust Your Relationships
Relationships bring a whole new level of stress to our lives. If you have adrenal fatigue, you may not have the energy to keep up many relationships - especially if they are negative.
Try to keep the positive ones and avoid the negative ones. And allow yourself to nurture relationships at your own pace - which means you may have to say 'no' a lot, especially when you're recovering. That's ok - your health is on the line. Just realize that true friends will understand and be there for you.
- Develop Nurturing, Meaningful Activities
Many people with adrenal fatigue have very little nurturing activities in their lives - activities that reduce stress, rebuild their spirit and rejuvenate them. Try to develop more time for enjoyment and meaningful activities in your life to offset the stress of everyday life.
- Take Frequent Breaks & Rest, Rest, Rest
Rest is one of the best ways to recover from adrenal fatigue. If you can't rest as much as you'd like, try to take frequent breaks during the day. I found just sitting and allowing myself the luxury of doing NOTHING really helped to reduce my stress.
Exposure to chemicals, heavy metals, allergens along with our standard North American diet adds tremendous stress to the body and greatly taxes our adrenal glands.
Detoxification can help to remove a lot of these harmful substances and speed recovery. A good detox diet will help you recover faster, lose weight, feel more energetic and clear your head.
Final Note on Treatment: Because of the lack of information about adrenal exhaustion, many people find that recovery can be difficult. You may feel frustrated because you can't do what you used to be able to do - and few people around you understand what you're going through (which makes it even more stressful).
You may wonder if you're dying or if you'll ever feel better (I know because that's what I wondered). The good news is that you can recover - but you have to get serious about reclaiming your health and protecting it.
You have to commit to doing whatever it takes to help your body heal - working with your health care practitioner, educating yourself, dealing with stress, etc. When you do that, it's possible to actually come back stronger than ever.
